Commemorating Al Nakba in film

As part of CJPP’s annual Nakba commemoration, this year we present  ’Remembering Al Nakba in film’  – a series of documentaries by a range of film-makers that focus on the Nakba and the ongoing oppression of Palestinian people. The Nakba, or catastrophe, refers to the forced expulsion and dispossession of Palestinians from their lands in 1948 with the establishment of the State of Israel.

SESSION ONE

The Sons of Eilaboun
Dir:  Hisham Zreiq
Germany/Israel-Palestine, 2007, 24 min
A documentary about the massacre, expulsion and return of a small Palestinian village in the Galilee.

My Land
Dir: Nabil Ayuch, Morocco, 2011, 80 min
“My Land” gives voice to Palestinian refugees living in camps in Lebanon for over 60 years.
Their story is listened to by young Israelis who feel firmly attached to their land.

SESSION TWO

Enduring Roots – Planting Resistance to the Jewish National Fund (JNF)
Dir: Alex SafronU.S., 2013, 32 min
This documentary chronicles stories of Nakba survivors, interviews with their descendants about
the case of refugee return, and current and growing resistance to the ongoing colonization of Palestine
by the 112 year old ; JNF.

On the Side of the Road
Dir: Lia Tarachansky, Israel/Palestine, 2013 , 92 min
The story of those who fought to erase Palestine and create an Israeli landscape of denial and of those who are fighting to reveal it.

SESSION THREE

Excavation
Dir: Avi Dabach, 2013 Israel, short
The 2010 demolition of the Abu-Id family house exposes the remains which were buried under the ruins.

Sacred Stones
Dirs.: Muayad Alayan,LailaHigazi , Palestine 2011, 52 min
In the villages, cities and refugee camps of the West Bank, natural stone is unearthed at maddening
unsustainable rates, leaving behind a wreck of environmental, social and health problems.

Women in Struggle
Dir: Buthina Khoury, Palestine 2004, 56mins
This documentary presents rare testimony from four female Palestinian ex-detainees who disclose their experiences during their years of imprisonment in Israeli jails and the effect it has had on their lives.
